The 4 Ply Process
First your roof decking is laid. Atop that will be your roofing insulation. Over the insulation there will be laid a vapor retarder to help control the amount of moisture passing through your insulation. Then the 4 Ply process begins. The first layer of the roofing is a layer of asphalt. Next will be bitumen soaked felt strips. Bitumen is a hydrocarbon compound derived from crude oil that serves as both an adhesive and a powerful waterproofing agent. After this layer of bitumen another layer of asphalt is added until four total layers have been accumulated.
This multi-ply process offers extreme protection from water and weathering, both from the agents used and the back-up layers. An additional benefit to having multiple layers of waterproofing agent is the increased thermal performance. The extra insulation allows your roof to be more energy efficient. The monolithic layering quality of the 4 Ply roofing also offers some of the highest fire retardant ratings in the industry. Additionally, because of the use of layers adhering to each other without the need for fasteners, there are less penetrations and therefore less stress points to succumb to increased wind resistance which provides extreme protection from uplifts. Lastly, one of the most popular benefits of 4 Ply roofing is the ease of maintenance. If your roof should need repair, often with a multi-ply system only a layer of asphalt or roof coating need be applied to complete reparations.
